Rooted in STEAM: Women Leading Discovery in Alaska

Join us for a guest lecture and meet and greet with author Margaret F. Merirtt Ph.D. Discover the adventures of an Alaskan woman biologist as she studies wildlife under sometimes harrowing conditions, overcoming challenges to ensure that conservation measures sustain fish and game for the community’s well-being. For many assignments, she was the first woman to undertake the job. Her persistence to succeed was motivated by the allure of adventure, the intrigue of nature, and the splendor or Alaska’s pristine wilderness.

She will describe her studies on six animals: sockeye salmon in the Copper River, early life history of chum salmon in Kotzebue Sound, caribou movement in the Kobuk River valley, stock separation research of chinook salmon in the Yukon River, aerial moose surveys in Southcentral, and red king crab investigations in Lower Cook Inlet. She will include a fun hands-on activity, explaining how to age salmon by examining patterns in scales and then letting the audience practice their newly found skills on some examples.

Free and open to the public. No registration ahead of time needed.
