Lichens of the Alaska Botanical Garden

Join Howard Earl, amateur naturalist and lichen enthusiast, for a walk and talk through the Alaska Botanical Garden and an introduction to the strange, beautiful, and surprisingly complex world of lichens. Along the way, you’ll learn what lichens are, how they are structured and reproduce, and the important roles they play in local ecosystems. Howard will also introduce some of the most common and fascinating lichens found in Southcentral Alaska and offer practical tips for beginning to recognize them in the field.

Whether you are an experienced naturalist or simply a curious hiker, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for these often-overlooked organisms—and perhaps a new way of seeing the landscape around you. The talk is included with admission to the Garden.
