Propagation of Native Species for Environmental Restoration

This presentation will cover the Knik Tribes restoration efforts with partnerships with home gardeners. Participants will learn what species are needed for different habitat restoration efforts, especially salmon riparian areas. Partnership program will be presented where home gardeners are contracted to propagate and supply plant materials. Seed collecting, storage, and germination of individual species covered. Ethical sourcing and accrual of cutting plant material methodologies presented. Example setups and hands on training activity to be provided. Addressing potential for home tissue culture of native species as a capstone topic.

 

Cody Beus holds a B.S. in Agricultural Education with a Minor of Horticulture and an M.S. in Natural Resources Agroforestry.
He is a lifelong Alaskan gardener who has been involved in projects such as the Southeast Island School District's Biomass Heated Greenhouse program, Palmer High Orchard and Greenhouse, and currently Agricultural Technical Specialist for the Knik Tribe.
