Volunteer

You're invited to join our great group of volunteers! Just download the volunteer application and mail or fax the application to (907) 770-0555. You'll learn about gardening, meet new friends, and know you've contributed to your community! Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Alaska Botanical Garden, a non-profit organization. The Garden would not be where it is today without the generous contributions from over 150 volunteers every year. Volunteers maintain our gardens and work in the nursery, under the supervision of our horticulturalist. We have many opportunities at special events both in the Garden and off site at other Gardens and events.

Garden Volunteers
Adopt-a-Bed Volunteers work in groups of 2 to 4 on a given garden bed during the period from late May through early September. They are given six hours of training on cultivation techniques, weed identification, plant staking procedures, and integrated pest management. They work under the supervision of our horticultural staff. This work requires approximately one hour per week, which can be rotated between the 2 to 4 volunteers.
Nursery volunteers assist the horticultural staff in potting up plants, writing plant labels, and tracking plant inventories.

Shop in the Garden Volunteers
Volunteers staff our small gift shop from June through early September. Two volunteers work each shift, under the supervision of the Gift Shop Manager.

Special Event Volunteers
Special event volunteers give out Garden information on membership and events, sell a limited selection of items from our gift shop, and take donations or admission depending on the event.

Garden Fair Volunteers
Our largest event of the year needs volunteers at our entry gate, selling plants in the nursery, staffing the purchase holding area, helping children with crafts in the Children's Village, helping to monitor our garden art show, working with musicians, speakers, logistics, and publicity.

Other Volunteers
Year round volunteers help in the office with mailings, data entry, and special projects. Board committees provide opportunities in fundraising, special event organizing, public relations, educational programming, and garden design and development.
