Position Opening:
The Alaska Botanical Garden is seeking a Gardens / Facilities Manager
This position is responsible for the overall upkeep of the gardens, trails,
landscape, and facilities of the Alaska Botanical Garden. The Gardens /
Facilities Manager reports to the Executive Director, and works closely as a
team with the ABG Horticulturist, other staff, and volunteers who help to maintain the gardens. He / She manages crews performing horticultural
and landscape maintenance on cultivated gardens, nature trails, and
stewardship of 110 acres of boreal forest. He / She oversees the installation
of plantings, and assists the Horticulturist in documenting, installing, and
managing plant collections and landscape improvements.
Energy, enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and strong work ethic are essential
for this position. Candidates should possess a strong knowledge of northern-
hardy ornamental plant materials, as well as organic, sustainable horticultural
“best practices”. An advanced degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Botany, or
related field is strongly preferred. Must know how to operate and maintain
irrigation systems, landscaping tools and equipment, and have basic carpentry,
plumbing, troubleshooting, budgeting and inventory management skills.
Candidates should have at least two years of supervisory experience;
experience with community service groups and at-risk youth is a plus.
At least 4 years of applicable experience with a Botanical Garden, farm, nursery,
or similar facility is required. This new position is year-round, full time from
April - October, and part-time Nov – March, eventually becoming full-time year-
round as the Garden grows. Salary DOE
